Job Description

Responsibilities:
The Senior Manager, Environmental Sustainability (SMES) provides global and national leadership, strategic direction, and support for the effective implementation and continuous improvement of an institution-wide environmental strategy.
Specifically, you will be responsible to:
serve as Vice-Chair to AKUs Environmental Responsibility Council (ERC). Work with the Chair to strengthen the ERCs processes and platforms for institution-wide oversight of the environmental strategy
lead the ERCs organization, agenda, administration, and communications
lead liaising, collaboration, and coordination with the AKDN Environment and Climate Committee, other AKDN agencies, and institutions globally, regionally, nationally and locally to advance the environmental strategy
represent AKU and its environmental strategy on internal and external fora
oversee and lead through technical expertise the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of AKUs first environmental strategy with a comprehensive agenda for stewardship through the universitys own corporate footprint and other core and wider activities through education, research, and service
develop the strategy consultatively across the institutions departments in all its geographies. Identify vision, mission, guiding principles and key aims. Develop short, medium and long-term milestones with budgetary projections and indicators for measuring progress. A decarbonization roadmap will be an integral component. Recommend the strategy for review by the ERC and subsequent approval by AKUs Executive Committee (EC)
commission periodic monitoring and evaluation of the strategy under direction of the ERC
work with AKU Communications to publish a high-level commitment of the strategy on AKUs webpage and other formats as identified. Ensure periodic updates (ie. annual plans) to the strategy for public consumption and in support of stakeholder management and resource development
strengthen AKUs current environmental management system (EMS); approaches to measuring and baselining carbon and other environmental impacts including through governmental environmental impact assessments; deepen the EMS institutional embeddedness; and link with increasing effectiveness measurement outcomes, reduction targets from our baseline, reduction measures, action plans, and budgetary requirements for reductions leveraging the decarbonisation roadmap to organise this work
oversee country-level focal points for greenhouse gases emissions reporting vis–vis the EMS and produce dashboard reporting to the AKDN-ECC. Develop an effective mechanism for country-level review of GHG reports with departmental leads, accounting for hotspots and brainstorming and proposing reduction measures. Identify and organize capacity building as required to support development of focal points and their teams
ensure effective human resources are identified, developed, and managed to carry out all aspects of underwriting excellence and quality in institutional performance and processes required
present outcomes of periodic EMS reporting to the ERC, seeking review and deliberation over results and reduction measures for subsequent review by the EC and integration with AKUs annual budget and planning cycle
ensure the EMS reflects the Networks wider carbon neutrality goals in collaboration with AKDN-ECC.
publish outcomes of performance management through various platforms, online and otherwise, for internal and external consumption
work closely with AKU Resource Development to identify opportunities to build a foundation of global supporters and champions to advance the environmental strategy
represent AKU and its environmental strategy in resource development fora locally and globally
develop specific discretionary and non-discretionary giving opportunities to support the environmental strategy.

Requirements:
Masters degree in relevant engineering field, environmental sciences, sustainability, business administration or related fields, or equivalent qualification
at least twelve years of experience to include positions in development/leadership of institutional environmental strategies, partnerships, and related positions including through consultancies
experience with AKU and AKDN a strong asset
experience in independent original research will be preferred
adept strategic sense, developed through experience within large, complex, and diverse organisations
analytical and conceptual skills essential for effective strategic thinking
demonstrated success in the design, implementation, evaluation of innovative institutional and departmental strategies which incorporate best practices
highly developed leadership, influencing and communication skills and demonstrable capability in relationship building at all levels
ability to work independently as well as with diverse and multi-professional teams mainly leadership and management teams
experienced in human resources management, coaching, and mentoring persons/teams
strong planning and management skills and ability to apply these skills in effective working partnerships across the organisation and with partners
strong self-management with a high level of energy, commitment and flexibility
good understanding of the countries and regions where AKU works. Openness to learning about all regions in which AKU works
ability to keep apprised of international best practices of policies, budgets and systems as they relate to environmental sustainability work
effective in representing AKU in a wide range of fora and carries the ability to work effectively with culturally and socially diverse staff and student populations
adept in building and maintaining relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders
fluency in English, verbal and written. Urdu, Swahili, and/or Dari language ability an asset
ability to travel internationally.
